It is with sadness and regret we must farewell Emily Relf who joined us earlier in 2020.

Emily became part of our Rotary family in 2016 when she applied to become a Rotary Exchange Student. She spent 12 months on exchange in Slovakia. After returning home and completing her senior education, she embarked on a Bachelor of Education degree at QUT.

A couple of months ago, Emily relocated to the Central Queensland town of Roma.

Emily can be found most days at the Royal on 99 Hotel, where she holds down a middle management position, whilst still working externally on her degree.

As disappointing as it is to lose Emily, we congratulate the Rotary Club of Roma on inducting Emily as their newest and youngest member.

Emily is the first ever female member to be inducted by the Rotary Club of Roma since their charter in September 1940.

Congratulations to you all!

Wednesday June 10^th saw Nicolai depart on a modified Queensland only Safari Tour, along with 5 other Inbound Rotary Exchange Students, 2 Rotary International Peace Scholars and YEP Officials David Bray and John Parkinson.

They will be visiting such places (in order of visits) as Charleville, then on to 2 nights in Longreach, Charters Towers, Undara, 3 nights in Atherton, Cardwell, 2 nights at Airlie Beach, Mackay, Yeppoon, Bundaberg, a couple of nights in Maroochydore and arriving home on Friday June 26^th.

Nicolai will be our clubs Guest Speaker on Tuesday evening, June 30^th, where he will summarise his Safari as well as his 12 months on exchange here with us.

Local Rotary club supports the forgotten section.
 Welcome to our newest Community Support Program, resulting directly from the COVID -19 pandemic that is currently griping Australia.The Federal and Queensland State Governments are doing a great job at most levels, but incredibly early into this crisis our members identified one section of our community that had slipped through the net.
At our recent weekly online meeting, it was brought to the members attention that the participants in one of Australia’s largest exports were being forgotten.
That group is the Overseas Students studying at our Universities and Colleges. Students who pay full tuition to study for their degrees as well as rent, travel, food, and other necessities of life. While studying, these students would normally hold down jobs serving tables in your restaurants, serving drinks in your favourite hotel and many other vocations.
Unfortunately, for them they seem to be the only section of our society that are not entitled to any relief from either the Federal of State Governments.
The Rotary Club of Brisbane Taylor Bridge based in Corinda have decided to support these students with the introduction of out “International Student Food Relief Project”.

Members will start packing the BOXES today (20/4/20) at Cilantro Fresh, ready for distribution through “Together We Are Stronger”, hopefully from tomorrow.

A huge thanks to Cilantro Fresh in Oxley Road, Corinda for both letting us use her premises, but also donating 100kg of rice and helping us order the non-perishable good such asbeans, pasta, tinned tomatoes, long-life milk, and  cooking oil.            

 In the boxes we will also be providing staples of fruit and vegetables such as potatoes, onions, garlic, pumpkin, carrots, green beans, apples and oranges.A huge thank you to Ben Bartlett and his team from of JH Leavy, who is helping us source the fruit and vegetables through their Darling Group.   Ben has not only arranged access to wholesale prices, but he has also donated a large delivery for our first boxes, and he is incredibly supportive of the project.                                                                                   

In addition to the food, some BOXES will include Hygiene Care Packs sourced from the Rotary Club of Brisbane International, to help with mental as well as physical health.

 We also have 20 only, $20 Essentials cards to be distributed to the recipients identified as most needy. These cards were made available by our Rotary Club purchasing 10,and one of our members, Fernanda, and her husband Ross donating the other 10.

The Rotary Club of Brisbane Taylor Bridge has had to change there meeting format due to the current pandemic situation.Social distancing laws have seen us move to electronic meetings on the ZOOM platform.
We are still operating at full capacity and welcome inquiries from the public.Our meetings are usually open to anyone, so if you are interested in joining in please contact the Secretary for the details.

Tonight at our weekly meeting, the members present resolved to continue meeting each Tuesday evening at our regular venue.We are, however, putting in place over the next few days, a facility for those who are not comfortable attending a group meeting.The meeting approved the setting up of a ZOOM platform so members and Friends can dial in and enjoy and participate in the meeting.
Sometime before the meeting next Tuesday evening, I will publish an invitation link.
These arrangements will be reviewed on a weekly basis, and amended as the need arises.

Tonight the club had the pleasure of welcoming our newest member, 18 year old Emily Relf.

With the start of each new year, we welcome back to the district, the Rotary Exchange Students whom have spent twelve months overseas.The students left Brisbane in January 2019, and returned recently, on January 11th  2020. 

Among to cohort was our own Xavier Cichero, who returns home after a year in Austria.Xavier looking splendid in his traditional Laderhosen.

The students were presented with their Graduation Certificates by David Bray, Chair of the District 9630 Rotary Youth Exchange Committee.

On hand to offer advice to the newest Rebound students, were Tzani Castley-Priest and our own Emily Relf.Emily was in the Slovak Republic through 2017.

We present to you “The Class of 2019.”

Also on hand with the Rebound students, new and old, were our current district Inbound’s.

You know a new year has begun when the Annual Interclub Bowls Challenge Cup is up for grabs.A bumper field of entries from six Rotary Clubs assembled at the Club Oxley greens to do battle.A massive thanks to Brisbane Taylor Bridge’s Franz Sauter for putting it all together again this year.
