Be informed on Community Issues

Senior Constable, Ben Harm, who is the officer in charge of the Centenary North Police Beat, visited us again recently to speak about crystal meth, more commonly known as ICE. Believe it or not, it is not a new drug. It has been around since the early 1900s and has had many uses before now. The key issue today is the increase in ICE usage as it is of a higher quality and more pure thus it is more addictive. The effects of ICE are not pretty, with many users losing weight, having sleep problems, initial euphoria followed by a big down which results in violence. It is a poison so it also has significant effects on skin (lesions), teeth etc.If you suspect someone is on ice or that someone may be having an unusual or dangerous reaction to it ring 000. On ICE people can overheat, dehydrate, have fits/seizures, collapse, panic and suffer from paranoia/psychosis. Encourage them to take a break – eat, drink, sleep, encourage them to seek treatment. Don’t forget, if you see anything suspicious, no matter how big or small, tell the Police, they want to know. You are NOT wasting their time. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Policelink 131444 (non urgent)

Farewell Elisa

Club Secretary, Elisa McDonald is taking a Leave Of Absence until mid 2017. Elisa, and her husband Cameron are expecting their first child in early December and we wish them the very best.On her final night, Elisa hosted a group of our members at her workplace, the Corinda Compounding Chemist in Oxley Road.

During this visit, Elisa introduced us to the lab and some of the equipment used to make compounded medicines.Surprisingly in this time of technology and mechanisation, a great deal of compounding chemistry is still done manually, as our Youth Exchange Student, David from Switzerland, found out.

The evening was very intriguing and informative, thanks Elisa.

Our District Governor Visits

What a big week, we had our District Governor Doug St Clair and his wife Sue, visit us. Doug spoke to us about how Rotary is Serving Humanity and that one good work at a time is all we can do. Doug also inducted our newest member Bill. Bill comes to us from Toowoomba. Doug pointed out that one new member could have that one new idea that could change the world. No pressure Bill 🙂 To see more visit www.facebook.com/RotaryBrisbaneTaylorBridge

Our RYLA attendee

This week, we heard from Ben, who recently attended the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) leadership camp. Ben spent the week learning important life and leadership skills and finding out more about himself. He admitted that at the camp he found out he was impatient and at times intolerant and closed minded. Through the team building and trust activities he learnt to be more open minded and tolerant. Ben has promised to share what he has learnt with others and ensure this enlightening experience is beneficial to more than just himself.

Meet Rosie – another of our newest members.

Rosie comes to us from the Lockyer Valley club and has a long association with Rotary. She was fortunate enough to go to the US on Youth Exchange a few years ago and that YEP year in Missouri began her appreciation for Rotary. Rosie was in the Lockyer Valley, in Grantham, when the floods of 2011 hit and it was through this all consuming experience and seeing the devastation and hurt left behind that Rosie helped the Rotary Club of Lockyer Valley to raise money for those directly affected. Rosie then became a member of the club. Rosie has a 3 year old son, who is the love of her life and she is currently on the District Youth Exchange Committee. Welcome Rosie.

Welcome to our newest member

Welcome to our newest member, Robert. It was an exciting night with Robert’s induction. He is keen to give back to the community through Rotary and the club is looking forward to what Robert can bring on board.

Welcome David, with your stories from Switzerland

This week, we heard from our Youth Exchange Program (YEP) student, David. He has come to Australia from Lucerne in Switzerland.
David has hit the ground running; helping out with car parking and the CTK Fun Run on the weekend.
He showed us pictures of his family, his mum and dad and brother, lots of skiing shots and the view from David’s house is amazing.
At 16 he is an exceptional young man who speaks German, English, French and a bit of Italian. David filled us in on Swiss politics, national military service and much more.To see more visit www.facebook.com/RotaryBrisbaneTaylorBridge
